Chapter Seventeen

EPIC’s notification letting Raphael know Javier’s extraction had been a complete success came with a huge sense of relief. He was happy for his friend. It also meant it was time to focus his energy on Tara’s rescue and it came none too soon, sensing the window of time for her safe removal was closing.

For two days now, Tara’s cold indifference during the day was only surpassed by her icy contempt at night. Nothing he did or said seemed to have any impact. Raphael climbed each step to his room; always hopeful something would change. He unlocked his door and took a deep breath before entering. Tara was in the corner, curled up in the chair. She stiffened, but otherwise pretended not to notice him.

“Tara, we need to talk. I’ve let you do this your way, but it’s not working.” She didn’t say a word or glance in his direction. Nothing.

Raphael crossed the room toward her, stopping short when she lifted her head and shot him an angry don’t-come-any-closer glare. “Okay, so if you won’t talk, then just listen. What you and I have is real. Can’t you listen to your heart and trust it?” Damn the DEA and the mission.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about. I was your willing whore. Nothing more. It served a purpose.” He winced. Talking was overrated.

“You can lie to me, but don’t lie to yourself. I notice you’re still wearing the opal.” Every time he’d caught a glimpse of it still around her neck, it had given him hope. Tara grasped the pendant and ripped the chain from her neck. She jumped to her feet, crossed the room, and flung it in the trash. “That’s what I think of your stupid gift.” Her words and action sliced his heart into a few more pieces, killing the last shred of hope he had.

Nothing but the truth would bring her back. And it was the one thing he couldn’t give her. Especially knowing Tara had never come clean and trusted him with the truth either. When she left Peru, she’d be taking her secret with her. A loud knock at his door kept him from answering. He flung open the door, more than a little irritated at the interruption. Rosita stood there looking frazzled, not something easily accomplished. “What’s wrong?”

“Dom Raphael, you must come quick. Carlos Sanchez is downstairs in the living room and demands to see you. And the girl.” She took a step back, fear in her eyes.

Raphael hesitated in answering. There was no good reason for Sanchez to venture this far unless there was a problem he intended to handle personally. Tara.

He wasn’t letting Sanchez anywhere near her, not if he could help it. “Tell him I’ll be right down.” He slammed the door shut and turned back to Tara.

“Stay put. I’d prefer it if you two didn’t meet.” She nodded her head in agreement, her eyes wide and full of questions. At least for the time being, they were on the same side.
